4 Posters Research - Kazumi






Representation
  • a man stands in front of a big city represents independence
  • use of weapons and his clothing trait common masculinity character
Genre - drama
  • facial expression shows calm and thoughtful as the character looking down with a smile
  • the colour of the whole poster is orangey and brown-ish which denotes energy, warmth and the sun.
  • 'searingly realistic', 'desperate men take desperate measures' and the word 'poetic' shows that it is emotional and dramatic film
  • use of silhouette leaves dramatic atmosphere to the poster

  • the triangle commonly represents the number three, therefore there might be relationships between three things in this film


2. Philomena

Representation
  • the way the woman looks at the guy and the way he looks away represent that the woman is into the conversation with him but he's not
  • the lady's coat is buttoned up while the guy's is opened
Genre -  drama/comedy
  • we can see that this film is not thriller or horror, because the whole poster looks really bright (high key lighting) and even there's no shadow.
  • use of yellow as background lit up everything in the poster which suggests that this film is light to watch
  • from 'true story of search for a lost son' we know it's true story made in dramatic way
  • illustration in the background also create atmosphere of happiness or joyful
  • both facial expressions looks really happy
  • costumes are also quite bright colour so they don't look scary or terrifying
  • the character's body language is very relaxed as if they're sitting
Audience - Fan of 'The Queen'/middle age adult
  • fan of 'The Queen' likely to watch this film
  • both characters are middle age adult so same aged group of people can be attracted
  • Judi Dench's name will attract her fans

  • the illustration in the background shows well-known buildings in Italy and Irish with airplane in the end of the line
  • 'true story of a search for a lost son' suggest they look for their son
  • this film might be a story of the two characters going two countries to look for their son


3. The Selfish Giant

  • the boy's costume, wearing hoody suggests he's a youth
  • the horse and power transmission suggest the setting is in a rural area

  • the word 'Heart-Wrenching' suggest the genre of drama
  • the boy and the horse are very close to each other, suggest there's drama between them
  • facial expression of the boy looks sad and thoughtful
  • although the mouth of the horse is at the boy's cloth, the boy does not look worried; he looks calm and pensive
  • the cream colour of the poster gives us a feeling of calm and quiet, which might refers to the setting of the film

  • audience can be same age group of the character, teenager or youth
  • 'Written and directed by Clio Barnard' can attract fan of Clio Barnard
  • reader of Times, Guardian, Telegraph, Total Film, etc. can be attracted by the quotes
  • rural area people like farmer can be interested because the horse
Narrative
  • The narrative of this film can be a drama between the boy and the horse in a rural area
  • the rural area can be in Ireland because there's rating from 'Irish Times'. Although there's rating from 'View London', we know that London is urban area and we know Ireland is rural area so I think the setting can be in Ireland


4. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Representation
  • the costume, striped pyjama of the boy inside the fence suggests a prisoner
  • meadow suggest the film set in a rural area
  • the clothing of another boy suggest preppy - representation of past
  • position of the characters; pyjama boy is behind the huge fence which suggest he's caged and restricted, while preppy boy has freedom
  • the colours of the grass; the grass behind the fence looks brown, empty and lifeless while the grass of outside the fence looks so green and energised
  • the emptiness of the field represent that the story is set in rural area

  • The huge fence in between the two boys suggests there's a difficulty seeing each other though they look good friend 
  • By having a lot of clouds in the sky suggests struggle or obscure meaning 
  • body language of the boys are relaxed and unwind though there's a big fence between them
  • 'Lines may divide us, hope will unite us' suggest struggle being together

  • although both of the characters are small and young, same age group of children won't watch this film as this film might refers to war or historical story
  • older teenagers could be watching this film as they go through the history in their education
  • 'Based on the best selling novel by John Boyne' can attract fan of the John Boyne and people who read the novel
Narrative
  • two young boys who have extremely different life in war time

  1. This is good work Kazumi - well done! You have managed to choose films that are appropriate and useful for your own short film, and you have covered key concepts. Avoid the genre category -Drama - this isn't a genre for our purposes (there are no conventions for Drama). Try Social Realism etc.
